Indoor Test cricket to be played in Hobart’s new stadium
The Macquarie Point stadium will be built in Hobart as part of a $750 million development plan. The stadium, designed by the Cox Architecture, will feature a retractable roof and a seating capacity of 23,000, able to be expanded to 27,000 without structural change. The design includes three tiers of seating, corporate boxes linked to an external hotel, and a playing surface slightly larger than the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
This new stadium has a retractable polymer roof and a flat surface constructed on rock that will accommodate both AFL and cricket events. Its roof height matches that of Marvel Stadium, which makes it suitable for a variety of sporting events.
It is hoped that this stadium will boost the state’s sporting and entertainment infrastructure, possibly hosting AFL games and attracting significant events, as well as hosting indoor Test cricket in Hobart.
